Energy compacts will provide tangible, concrete actions to achieve the roadmap towards 2030 and 2050, which will be presented to the High-level Dialogue on Energy in September.
A global roadmap for actions needed to achieve clean, affordable energy for all by 2030 is currently being developed by five Technical Working Groups focusing on the themes of the Dialogue.
Leaders from the UN, the private sector, national and local governments, youth and other organizations have called for countries, businesses, cities, and civil society groups to put forward “Energy Compacts” to show how they will contribute to achieving the goal of clean, affordable energy for all by 2030 (SDG 7) and net-zero emissions by 2050.
Announcements of the Energy Compacts will begin in June during the Ministerial Thematic Forums, which will lead up to the September meeting of the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy.
Energy compacts will provide tangible, concrete actions to achieve the roadmap towards 2030 and 2050. For countries, the Compacts will align with enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions and long-term climate goals under the Paris Agreement.
The call to action was issued by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Liu Zhenmin, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and Secretary-General of the Dialogue, as well as the Co-Chairs of the High-level Dialogue, Achim Steiner, Administrator of UNDP, and Damilola Ogunbiyi, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and CEO for Sustainable Energy for All.
Also included among those calling for action are Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change; Alok Sharma, UK President of the UNFCCC COP 26; Francesco Starace, CEO of Enel; Per Heggenes, CEO of the IKEA Foundation; Rajiv J. Shah, President of the Rockefeller Foundation; Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of Banjul, Gambia; Mohammed Adjei Sowah, Mayor of Accra, Ghana; Dymphna van der Lans, CEO of the Clean Cooking Alliance; and Jaff Epse Bime
Marilyn Bongmo and Tien Pham, youth activists from Cameroon and Viet Nam.
The Energy Compacts are one part of the outcome expected from the High-level Dialogue on Energy. A global roadmap for actions needed to achieve clean, affordable energy for all by 2030 is currently being developed by five Technical Working Groups focusing on the themes of the Dialogue: energy access; energy transition; enabling the SDGs through inclusive, just energy transitions; innovation, technology and data; and finance and investment.
