The Eighth International Conference on Waste Management and Technology (ICWMT 8) highlighted policy and technical issues and the technologies involved in managing and recovering waste electronic wastes (e-waste).
ICWMT 8 took place from 23-25 October 2013, in Shanghai, China, with the theme of 'Towards Ecological Civilization.'
October 2013: The Eighth International Conference on Waste Management and Technology (ICWMT 8) highlighted policy and technical issues and the technologies involved in managing and recovering waste electronic wastes (e-waste). ICWMT 8 took place from 23-25 October 2013, in Shanghai, China, with the theme of ‘Towards Ecological Civilization.’
The Conference featured keynote speeches on solid waste management policy and strategy. In addition to e-waste management policy and technology, the 48 presentations addressed mercury wastes and the just-adopted Minamata Convention on Mercury, other international developments in chemicals and waste management, recovery and disposal of biomass and household wastes, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) waste management, contaminated sites regulation and management, and the management and sound disposal of construction, industrial and hazardous wastes.
The Conference included workshops on e-waste treatment technology, auditing e-waste, and technical policies for pollution prevention and control of waste household appliances and electronic products. Other workshops addressed hazardous waste disposal facilities construction, accreditation and operation, and implementation in Asia and the Pacific of the Basel Convention on Hazardous Wastes. In addition, technical field trips highlighted e-waste treatment, waste plastic recovery and hazardous waste incineration.
Attended by 438 participants from 28 countries, ICWMT 8 was organized by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (BCRC China) together with the Solid Waste Management Centre of China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection, China’s State Environmental Protection Engineering Centre for the Recycle Informatization and Treatment of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, and the Society of Solid Wastes of the Chinese Society for Environmental Sciences. It was co-hosted by the Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific (SCRCAP), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), China’s Ministry of Education, Tsinghua University and several Chinese academies, institutes, laboratories and centers.
