25 November 2011: The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has published the report of its “ICAO Aviation and Sustainable Alternative Fuels Workshop,” held in Montréal, Canada, on 18 -20 October 2011.

The report, titled “ICAO Review: Sustainable Alternative Fuels for Aviation,” aims to share knowledge gained during the workshop, identify challenges, and provide a pathway for reaching global goals. The report begins with Jane Hupe, ICAO’s Environmental Branch Chief, stating that “we are no longer talking about the technical possibility of aviation using drop-in sustainable alternative fuels in the future. We are now talking about how it will happen.”

The report’s ten chapters focus on: scene setting; a vision for the sustainability of alternative fuels for aviation; an overview of consortia working on these issues; the current state of research on alternative aviation fuels; qualification of alternative aviation fuels; deployment of sustainable alternative aviation fuels; partnerships and cooperation; legal and regulatory frameworks; accounting, life-cycle analysis, and sustainability; and financing alternative fuels.
