GAELP Launches Toolkit for Establishing Lead Paint Laws
story highlights

The Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead in Paint (GAELP or Lead Paint Alliance) released a tool kit for establishing laws to control the use of lead in paint, during the Fourth International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM4).

GAELP paint29 September 2015: The Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead in Paint (GAELP or Lead Paint Alliance) released a tool kit for establishing laws to control the use of lead in paint, during the Fourth International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM4).

Led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), the Alliance resulted from work on lead in paint as an “emerging policy issue” under the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM). It currently has partners from 11 governments and 31 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), including an international industry group.

The tool kit was developed by Alliance partners to provide information to government officials interested in setting legal limits for lead in paint in their countries. The tool kit contains different modules covering, among others, the adverse health and environmental impacts of lead, measuring lead in blood and paint, paint testing in developing countries and the availability of alternatives. The tool kit also offers case studies of laws or regulations setting legal limits used in the EU, the Philippines, Uruguay and the US.

UNEP announced that it will test the toolkit at an East African sub-regional workshop, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in December 2015.

ICCM4 took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on 28 September-2 October 2015. [Toolkit Website] [IISD RS Coverage of ICCM4]
