The publication consists of examples submitted through a 2021 open call from DESA for SDG good practices, success stories, and lessons learned by governments, the UN system, and other stakeholders.

It highlights good practices from Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Americas, and provides insights into how partners have responded to COVID-19, while maintaining their commitment to the SDGs.

The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) published 21 examples of successful SDG implementation efforts from around the world. The partnerships and innovative solutions featured in the publication can support recovery efforts from the COVID-19 pandemic and accelerate progress towards the SDGs.

The publication titled, ‘SDG Good Practices: A Compilation of Success Stories and Lessons Learned in SDG Implementation,’ is in its second edition. Its goal is to “inspire governments and other stakeholders around the world to find innovative solutions to tackle SDG-related challenges and help facilitate peer learning and concrete partnerships,” Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin notes in a foreword.

The publication consists of examples submitted through an open call from DESA for SDG good practices, success stories, and lessons learned by governments, the UN system, and other stakeholders, conducted in 2021. DESA reports that it received over 700 submissions, of which over 460 are publicly available on a dedicated online platform, which serves as a global registry of voluntary commitments and multi-stakeholder partnerships in support of the SDGs. An inter-agency expert team from UN bodies reviewed the submissions and selected a sample of initiatives to include in the publication.

In the report, 21 selected cases are described in detail. The publication includes chapters highlighting initiatives that focus on:

  • Investment in people, organizations, infrastructure, and transition;
  • Empowerment of those left further behind in Africa, particularly vulnerable populations in rural locations;
  • The intrinsic value and sustainability of multi-stakeholder collaboration and coordination in Asia-Pacific;
  • Awareness-raising and technical support to engage more stakeholders in the delivery of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in Europe; and
  • Innovative blueprints in the Americas which would be easily replicable worldwide.

The good practice examples also provide “insights into how partners have responded to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, while maintaining their commitment to SDG implementation.” [Publication: SDG Good Practices: A Compilation of Success Stories and Lessons Learned in SDG Implementation] [Publication Landing Page] [SDG Knowledge Hub Story on First Edition of SDG Good Practices] [SDG Knowledge Hub Story about DESA’s Report on Repository of Good Practices in VNR Reporting]
