story highlights

The Climate Insurance database aims to contribute to “successful and sustainable” climate risk insurance projects in climate-vulnerable countries through sharing best practice, and find innovative solutions.

The database claims to be the first independent, comprehensive source of information on the numerous types of climate risk insurance available, compiling information from several international organizations.

The database includes factsheets, videos and reports, compiled in a searchable online catalogue that users can filter by type, topic, country, region or organization.

13 October 2017: The Global Index Insurance Facility (GIIF), the Munich Climate Insurance Initiative (MCII) and the German Corporation for International Cooperation GmbH (GIZ) have launched an online tool that aims to contribute to improving the way impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities are addressed.

Commissioned by the Government of Germany and launched on the International Day for Disaster Reduction, the Climate Insurance database aims to contribute to “successful and sustainable” climate risk insurance projects in climate-vulnerable countries through sharing best practice, and find innovative solutions.

The Climate Insurance database is the first independent, comprehensive source of information on the numerous types of climate risk insurance available that policymakers and practitioners can use to make informed decisions.

Risk transfer and insurance have received increasing attention in recent years within international arenas, including the Group of 20 (G20), the Group of 7 (G7), the UNFCCC as well as under the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), as a way of responding to the increasing impacts of loss and damage caused by climate change. However, according to its creators, the Climate Insurance database is the first independent, comprehensive source of information on the numerous types of climate risk insurance available that policymakers and practitioners can use to make informed decisions.

The database, grounded in a GIIF online platform and managed by the World Bank Group, includes factsheets, videos and reports, compiled in a searchable online catalogue that users can filter by type, topic, country, region or organization, in order to find the most relevant sources for their situation. As well as factsheets that evaluate the experiences of international organizations’ projects on climate risk insurance more broadly, the database also includes more specialized “InFocus” analyses that concentrate on a specific technical topic within a climate risk insurance project, highlighting barriers and overall recommendations.
