CIFOR24 May 2013: The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) in collaboration with the Government of Cameroon convened a regional conference on sustainable forest management (SFM) in Central Africa. The outcome of the conference is a declaration on the future of Central Africa’s forests.

The declaration recognizes the importance of forests in Central Africa as well as the many threats faced by forests and the ecosystem services they provide. In response, the declaration calls for a landscape approach to SFM, and improved policies and laws to enhance the contribution of forests to development and empowerment.

The declaration also calls for improved stakeholder collaboration and awareness raising, as well as the formalization of informal forest sectors in order improve the marketing, recognition and value of timber and non-timber forest products.

In addition to the declaration, the conference convened a special session on REDD+ Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) in Cameroon. The special session launched the MRV country profile for Cameroon examining the current and anticipated future drivers of deforestation as well as international considerations with regard to MRV.
