10YFP Meeting Seeks to Foster Global Movement on SCP
story highlights

Delegates discussed implementation of circular economy approaches, tools, and initiatives developed by the 10YFP and its partners in the framework of the Global Strategy for Sustainable Consumption and Production (2022-2030) and the Results Framework and Budget of the 10YFP Secretariat (2023-2024).

The meeting agreed to take a decision regarding the date and venue for the global dialogue on SCP and its joint scheduling with a proposed One Planet Network Forum at a virtual meeting scheduled for 18 March 2024.

The 10-Year Framework of Programmes for Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP) Board and Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) Partners met on the sidelines of the sixth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) to share experiences in the implementation of SCP.

The Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) summary report of the meeting highlights unsustainable production and consumption patterns as a major driver of the triple planetary crises of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. According to the Circularity Gap Report 2023, ENB notes, “93% of materials are either wasted, lost, or unavailable for reuse, with only 7.2% of material recycled back into the economy.”

Convened on 24 February 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, the 10YFP Board and SCP Partners meeting contributed to UNEA-6’s theme of ‘Effective, inclusive, and sustainable multilateral actions against climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.’

Secretariat updated Board Members and SCP Partners on priority activities under the Framework and Budget for 2023-2024, including the launch of a global toolkit to assist countries in building circularity into their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement on climate change and a global dialogue on SCP.

In five thematic sessions, the meeting considered ways to:

  • Foster a global movement and commitments for action on SCP and identify a multilateral and multi-stakeholder dialogue as one of the means to achieve this result;
  • Leverage digital standards and tools for SCP;
  • Mobilize business commitments to implement SCP and a circular economy, and measure progress through a Global Circularity Protocol for Business;
  • Accelerate actions towards the implementation of food systems transformation targets; and
  • Promote scientific and data-driven approaches to promote SCP by closing the SDG data gap and accelerating the implementation of the circular economy.

Delegates agreed to take a decision regarding the date and venue for the global dialogue on SCP and its joint scheduling with a proposed One Planet Network Forum at a virtual meeting scheduled for 18 March 2024.

The 10YFP was adopted as one of the operational outcomes of ‘The Future We Want’ (A/CONF.216/5). Implementing the 10YFP is part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and SDG target 12.1. The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) acts as the 10YFP Secretariat and administers the Trust Fund to implement SCP in developing countries. [ENB Coverage of 10YFP Board and SCP Partners Meeting]
