The UN General Assembly (UNGA) will hold a thematic event on the theme, ‘El Nifio 2023-2024: Actions for the Safety, Sustainability and Resilience of People and the Planet’. The event will include panels on:

• Actions to reduce El Niño 2023-2024 risks; and
• Long-term strategies to create the enabling institutional and policy environment required to take effective action. 

The event will generate action-oriented recommendations to address El Niño’s socioeconomic and environmental impacts.

The UNGA President announced the thematic event during a joint briefing of the Presidents of the UNGA and the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
