The Shared Waters Partnership (SWP) is organizing two Mekong Workshops on Water-Food Security in Cambodia and the Viet Nam Delta. The workshops will bring together experts, policymakers and researchers in agriculture, fisheries and livelihoods with national and local stakeholders to discuss food security, promote science based decision-making, and enhance local capacity for understanding water and food security challenges. The workshops will be organized around seven themes: water access, land resources and food production; declining fish production and spawning impediments; health and dietary patterns; impacts on agriculture-based livelihoods and irrigation; regional food trade; alternatives and strategies to contemporary food production; and coping strategies and socioeconomic effects. The workshops will include keynote speakers, scenario discussions and paper sessions. The workshops build upon a regional SWP workshop held in Chiang Rai, Thailand, in March 2013 that highlighted two threats to food security in the Lower Mekong Basin: risks from declining fisheries in Cambodia's Tonle Sap ecosystem; and challenges in sustainable delta management in Viet Nam resulting from changes in water flow and salt water intrusion. The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Stockholm International Water Institute's (SIWI) implement the SWP. The Viet Nam Delta workshop will be held in collaboration with the Mekong Delta Development Research Institute (MDI), which is part of Can Tho University.
