Second Annual Forum on Human Rights Defenders in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Second Annual Forum on Human Rights Defenders in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean will address the situation of human rights defenders in environmental matters in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Participants will share best practices and experiences in the promotion and protection of environmental defenders and continue discussions and consultations on the Plan of Action.

The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), in its capacity as the Secretariat of the Escazú Agreement, is organizing the Forum in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), and the Government of Panama, with the support of the World Bank.

The Forum aims to: reflect and raise awareness on the situation and risks faced by human rights defenders in the region; share existing mechanisms and initiatives for the promotion, prevention, and protection of human rights defenders in the world and in the region; contribute to strengthening capacities and cooperation among the parties, the public, and other key actors; and discuss proposals for action.
