International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (ILPPW) raises awareness and promotes actions to address the human health effects of lead exposure, especially for children. During the Week, governments, academia, industry and civil society advance efforts to prevent childhood lead poisoning, and specifically laws to eliminate lead in paint.

The 2019 ILPPW aims to:

• Raise awareness about health effects of lead poisoning;
• Highlight countries and partners’ efforts to prevent particularly childhood lead poisoning; and
• Urge further action to eliminate lead paint through regulatory action at country level.

By eliminating lead paint, countries contribute to the achievement of SDG target 3.9 (By 2030 substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water, and soil pollution and contamination) and SDG target 12.4 (By 2020, achieve the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and significantly reduce their release to air, water and soil in order to minimize their adverse impacts on human health and the environment).

The Week is organized by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) through the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead in Paint.
