International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2024

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 7 February 2000. In resolution 54/134, the UNGA invited governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to join together and organize activities designed to raise public awareness of the issue annually on that date.

According to the UN, violence against women and girls (VAWG) remains “largely unreported due to the impunity, silence, stigma, and shame surrounding it”. VAWG continues to be an obstacle to achieving equality, peace, development, and the fulfillment of women and girls’ human rights. The Day underscores an end to violence against women and girls as essential to leave no one behind.
