The Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) organizes an annual forum as a special event to the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) to highlight the role of higher education in achieving sustainable development. The HESI 2023 Global Forum will focus on understanding the challenges and opportunities to accelerate the recovery from COVID-19 and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels, in line with the 2023 HLPF theme.
The Forum will highlight key higher education initiatives that drive implementation of the 2030 Agenda through education, teaching, and learning, with a particular focus on the SDGs under review at the 2023 HLPF: SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation); SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy); SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure); SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities); and SDG 17 (partnerships for the Goals). The special event will also consider opportunities for transformation in the higher education sector, including through cross-institutional partnerships and best practices in higher education quality metrics.
HESI, a partnership between UN entities and the higher education community, is currently chaired by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and the Sulitest Association. Other partners include the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Global Compact’s Principles for Responsible Management Education initiative, UN University (UNU), the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT), the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the UN Office for Partnerships (UNOP), and UN Academic Impact.
