Further Resumed Fifth Session of the Intergovernmental Conference on BBNJ (BBNJ IGC-5)

The “further resumed” Fifth Session of the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) on an international legally binding instrument under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) will convene from 19-20 June 2023, to formally adopt the agreement.

At the resumed Fifth Session, which took place from 20 February to 3 March 2023, delegates “agreed” to the text as discussed during closed-door President’s consultation, without formally adopting it in plenary. The IGC established an open-ended informal working group to undertake technical edits, harmonize the wording in all six UN official languages, and report to the Intergovernmental Conference, which, delegates agreed, would hold another resumed session in the next few months with a view to adopting the agreement. The UN General Assembly (UNGA), in its decision 77/556, requested the Secretary-General to convene a further resumed Fifth Session of the Conference.
