The fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) was scheduled to take place during the last week of February 2021, in Nairobi, Kenya, as agreed during UNEA-3 in December 2017. Due to the global pandemic, an online session of UNEA-5 took place virtually from 22-23 February 2021. A resumed, in-person session of UNEA-5 will take place from 28 February – 2 March 2022.
The overall theme of UNEA-5 is “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”. The theme calls for strengthened action to protect and restore nature and the nature-based solutions to achieve the SDGs in its three complementary dimensions (social, economic and environmental).
Agenda items include:
- International environmental policy and governance issues
- Programme of work and budget and other administrative and budgetary issues
- Contributions to the meetings of the high-level political forum on sustainable development and implementation of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
