On 19 June 2023, after nearly two decades of talks, governments adopted the international legally binding instrument on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ). 

The BBNJ Agreement will open for signature on 20 September 2023, at the seat of the interim Secretariat at UN Headquarters in New York, US. The Agreement will enter into force after the deposit of the 60th instrument of ratification.
