23rd meeting of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea

The 23rd meeting of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea will focus on the theme, ‘New Maritime Technologies: Challenges and Opportunities’.

The Informal Consultative Process was established in 1999 by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) to facilitate its annual review of developments in ocean affairs and the law of the sea by considering the report of the Secretary-General on oceans and the law of the sea and by suggesting particular issues to be considered by it, with an emphasis on identifying areas where coordination and cooperation at the intergovernmental and inter-agency levels should be enhanced. In 2021, the UNGA decided to continue the Informal Consultative Process for the next two years, with a further review of its effectiveness and utility by the General Assembly at its 78th session.
