The Special Event on Financing to End Hunger, Food Insecurity, and Malnutrition in All Its Forms is one of a series of high-profile special events taking place on the sidelines of the 2024 UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). The event will share key messages from the report titled, ‘The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2024,’ and discuss implications for the HLPF.
The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is convening several high-profile special events to highlight the impact of key sectors of society in driving SDG implementation, including this one on financing to end hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition. SDG 2 (zero hunger) is one of five SDGs under review at HLPF 2024.
The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) is an annual flagship report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO). The 2024 SOFI report explores gaps in financing for food security and nutrition and provides guidance on innovative financing options to address the main drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition. The report also considers transformation needed in agrifood systems to meet SDG targets 2.1 on ending hunger, and food security and 2.2 on eradicating all forms of malnutrition.
In light of the report’s findings, the Special Event will consider how to mobilize innovative financing options to improve food security and nutrition and meet the SDG 2 targets. The event will contribute to discussions at the 2024 HLPF, the Summit of the Future, and the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in 2025.
