17th Informal Consultations of States Parties to the UN Fish Stocks Agreement

The UN Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 10 December 1982 relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks entered into force on 11 December 2001.

The 17th round of informal consultations of States Parties to the UN Fish Stocks Agreement (ICSP/17) will focus on the topic, ‘Sustainable Fisheries Management in the Face of Climate Change’. Participants will also begin preparatory work for the resumption of the Review Conference on the Agreement.

The meeting will focus on four segments related to the theme:

  • Understanding the impacts of climate change on fisheries;
  • Overview of the legal framework for sustainable fisheries management in the face of climate change;
  • Sustainable fisheries management in the face of climate change: case studies, best practices, and challenges at regional and national levels; and
  • Challenges and opportunities for strengthening sustainable fisheries management in the face of climate change.

The event will bring together States parties to the Agreement, States and entities referred to in the Convention of the Agreement, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), other relevant UN organizations, bodies, programmes and funds, the secretariats of relevant organizations and conventions and other relevant intergovernmental organizations and bodies, in particular subregional and regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs), and others.
