The UN has issued a call for written inputs to help shape the future of artificial intelligence (AI) governance. Established by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in 2025, the Global Dialogue on AI Governance is an inclusive platform within the UN for Member States and stakeholders to discuss the critical issues concerning AI.
Mandated by the Pact for the Future and its Global Digital Compact, the Global Dialogue on AI Governance offers a space for governments, civil society, academia, and technical experts to discuss international cooperation on AI, share best practices and lessons learned, and foster open, transparent, and inclusive discussions on AI governance. Intergovernmental negotiations and extensive consultations with diverse stakeholders preceded its establishment.

The Global Dialogue was set up by the same UNGA resolution as the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI – the first global scientific body on AI that brings together leading experts to assess how AI is transforming people’s lives. Prior to their inclusion in the Global Digital Compact, both the Global Dialogue on AI Governance and the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI were among the recommendations of the High-level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence (HLAB-AI) the Secretary-General established in 2023.
Submissions to this call for inputs will help inform the first session of the Global Dialogue, to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 6-7 July 2026. Intergovernmental consultations towards a “successful and meaningful” Global Dialogue are also underway. These are facilitated by the Co-Chairs of the Global Dialogue on AI Governance – Permanent Representative of El Salvador Egriselda López and Permanent Representative of Estonia Rein Tammsaar.
According to a draft note on themes and structure of the Global Dialogue, prepared by the Global Dialogue Co-Chairs, the proposed thematic clusters for the session include:
- AI opportunities and implications across the societal, cultural, and economic dimensions;
- Bridging AI divides: Capacity building, access, and digital foundations;
- Safe, secure, and trustworthy AI: Responsible and interoperable approaches; and
- Respecting, protecting, and promoting human rights: Transparency, accountability, and human oversight.
The submission portal for the Global Dialogue on AI Governance will receive inputs through 30 April 2026. [Call for Inputs]
