By Hawa Yaouba, United People Global Sustainability Leader and SDG 6 advocate
In a world racing against time to meet the SDGs by 2030, United People Global (UPG) is doing something remarkable: it’s putting young people at the heart of sustainable change. UPG isn’t just offering online lessons; it’s cultivating a global network of passionate, capable youth who are turning knowledge into real-world action.
At the core of UPG’s mission is accessibility. Through its UPG Sustainability Leadership Program, the organization offers a completely free, nine-week intensive training designed to equip young people with the tools, guidance, and confidence they need to make a lasting difference. This online program brings together over 500 young leaders annually from all corners of the world selected from thousands of applicants. They spend weeks diving into the 17 SDGs, gaining leadership skills, and developing practical knowledge across different fields of sustainability.
But what truly sets UPG apart is its belief in practical impact. From the start, each participant chooses at least one SDG that resonates with a real issue in their community. With guidance from mentors, they design community-based projects that directly address those issues. Whether it’s building climate resilience, improving gender equality, promoting access to clean water, or encouraging local entrepreneurship, UPG sustainability leaders don’t just learn. They lead others by organizing mini training sessions to equip them with the knowledge of sustainable development impacts.
An experience that transforms lives: Hurricane Island
For 60 standout participants, the journey continues with an invitation to Hurricane Island in Maine, US – a week-long, fully-funded leadership and sustainability experience. This in-person training takes everything learned online and brings it to life through hands-on activities, collaboration, and immersive learning in nature. It’s more than just a trip. It’s a life-changing experience.
On Hurricane Island, participants deepen their understanding, refine their projects, and build strong bonds with fellow change makers. The island becomes a space where inspiration meets action. Many leave with clearer project goals as well as life-long friendships and a stronger commitment to driving change in their communities.
The power of local champions
One of UPG’s biggest strengths is the way it fosters collaboration at the grassroots level. Accepted candidates become UPG Champions – certified sustainability leaders committed to working together as a team in their home countries. And when these champions come together locally, the results are powerful.
In cities and villages across the globe, UPG Champions are forming networks, teaming up to support one another’s initiatives, and launching collaborative efforts that tackle issues from multiple angles. They aren’t just individual project leaders, they’re part of a movement.
Each UPG leader is also tasked with hosting at least one local training session, reaching at least 20 people in their community. This ripple effect means that UPG’s impact doesn’t stop with its initial cohort. Instead, it multiplies, spreading knowledge and motivation to others, and nurturing a growing wave of sustainability advocates.
More than a program
Beyond the training itself, UPG provides ongoing support through initiatives like the Learning Lab, which offers continued access to resources and mentorship, and Biashara – a program that supports entrepreneurship and innovation. Once you’re part of UPG, you’re never walking alone.
The impact is already visible. Clean water projects are thriving in rural India. In Kenya, young innovators are building agritech startups that increase food security and boost incomes. In Latin America, waste reduction campaigns are reshaping city neighborhoods. These are not just isolated success stories. They’re part of a bigger picture of global transformation, powered by youth.
A call to action
UPG shows what happens when young people are not just seen as future leaders, but empowered as leaders today. With the right tools, mentorship, and belief in their potential, they are solving problems and building solutions that matter.
What makes UPG different is its human touch. It’s not about bureaucracy. It’s about people, real stories, real change, and real leaders.
And the best part? This opportunity is open to all. UPG breaks down economic, geographic, and social barriers so that leadership and impact are not just for the privileged few but for anyone with the passion and dedication to make a difference.
So, whether you’re a young person eager to lead, a person eager to learn about the SDGs, or someone who simply believes in the power of community-driven action, there’s a place for you in this movement.
