Forty-seven representatives from 24 English-speaking African countries are participating in a regional capacity-building workshop on Best Available Techniques and Best Environmental Practices (BAT and BEP) and the Environmentally Sound Management (ESM) of persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

The workshop, which is convening from 15-19 June 2009, at UN headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, was organized to build national capacity to manage POPs waste, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) oils and contaminated equipment in an environmentally sound manner. The participants, who represent countries that are party to Stockholm Convention on POPs, will learn about an electronic training tool on the Basel Convention POPs waste guidelines to foster understanding of the concepts, principles and standards of BAT and BEP.
