10 February 2011: The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) has reported that the Government of Sri Lanka has designated its fifth Wetland of International Importance.

The Kumana Wetland Cluster Ramsar Site falls within two existing protected areas, Kumana National Park and the Panama-Kudumbigala Sanctuary, and consists of a diversity of coastal wetland habitats, including lagoons, estuaries, irrigation reservoirs, mangroves, salt marshes, sand dunes, scrubland and forest vegetation.
