UNEP1 December 2011: As part of the Government of Sudan’s progress towards establishing a climate change national adaptation plan by 2013, the country’s Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources has organized a capacity building workshop, with the support of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).

The workshop was held from 20-22 November, 2011 in Khartoum, Sudan and focused on providing practical training to enable the immediate initiation of climate change vulnerability and adaptation assessments at the state and local levels in Sudan. The workshop is part of a project aimed at preparing Sudan’s Second National Communication under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), with support from UNEP. UNEP says it will continue to provide support within the seven themes of the climate change project, including “hotspot” mapping, assessing coastal zone vulnerability to climate change and “climate-proofing” programmes. The project is funded by the United Kingdom, through the Department for International Development. [UNEP Press Release] [UNEP Sudan Programme]
