1 May 2017: The President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, officially launched the National Council for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, emphasizing that eradicating poverty and achieving sustainable development will require transformations regarding “the way societies and nations live, interact and relate to each other.”

Nieto announced the establishment of two new mechanisms regarding the 2030 Agenda: elaboration of a National Strategy for Implementation of the 2030 Agenda; and the first phase of the National Platform for Monitoring the SDGs. On the National Strategy, he said it will: incorporate a long-term vision to guarantee the continuity of national efforts regarding the 2030 Agenda, with coordination by the President’s Office; be based on a broad consultation process for its implementation plan, which the National Council will oversee; and guide the elaboration of future national development plans. The National Platform, he said, will help determine progress in achieving the SDGs.

Nieto promised that Mexico’s 2018 budget will consider the SDGs.
