28 May 2018: UNFCCC Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa has published an opinion piece in advance of the upcoming G7 Leaders’ Summit, calling on the G7 to provide a clear signal for climate action.
A clear signal, Espinosa explains, will help incentivize the climate change process in 2018, increase the chances of achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change and reduce the cost of future actions.
Given that the 24th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 24) to the UNFCCC, to be held in Katowice, Poland, from 3-14 December 2018, will take stock of pre-2020 action, Espinosa highlights that G7 members must assess efforts to fulfill their collective pledge of mobilizing US$100 billion annually by 2020. She reiterates the importance of such funding to help developing countries contribute to climate action and the Paris Agreement.
The G7 Leaders’ Summit will convene from 8-9 June 2018 in Charlevoix, Quebec, Canada. [UNFCCC Press Release] [G7 Canada: The Charlevoix Summit] [2018 G7 Summit Website]
