5 April 2019: The UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) has launched an online platform that aims to raise awareness and inspire nature-based solutions to create a “groundswell” of multi-stakeholder actions in the lead-up to the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) in 2020 in China. The platform will highlight biodiversity efforts from around the world, drawing attention to success stories and best practices through a variety of means, including public-private partnerships (PPPs), community-level engagement, and inter-agency collaboration.
The online platform for the ‘Sharm El-Sheikh to Kunming Action Agenda for Nature and People’ was launched on 5 April 2019 and is available on the CBD website. The Action Agenda was announced by the Governments of Egypt and China, in collaboration with the CBD Secretariat, during COP 14’s Ministerial Segment. COP 14 was held in November 2018 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
Registered actions need to deliver tangible, measurable, and meaningful results for biodiversity.
The Action Agenda is meant to be complimentary to the process for Voluntary National Commitments, broadening the call to action to indigenous peoples and local communities, civil society, the private sector, sub-national and local governments, intergovernmental organizations, research and academia, and youth. It aims to enhance implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, its Aichi Biodiversity Targets, and the SDGs, as well as support the post-2020 global biodiversity framework for adoption at COP 15 in China.
The Action Agenda online platform aims to provide a repository of actions taken for nature by all sectors of society in order to ensure that the post-2020 global biodiversity framework debuts “with the full commitment and engagement” of the global community. The platform will enable the mapping of biodiversity efforts around the world, estimate impact, and help to identify key gaps.
Through the platform, CBD is looking for concrete actions that can be scaled up to help accelerate biodiversity conservation and/or sustainable use, and expand access to and the sharing of benefits from genetic resources. The ‘Make a Commitment’ section explains that registered actions need to deliver “tangible, measurable, and meaningful” results for biodiversity. [CBD Notification] [Action Agenda Online Platform]
