ENVIRONMENT-AIR POLLUTION WHO Global Conference Recommends Reducing Deaths from Air Pollution by Two-Thirds by 2030
2 November 2018: The First World Health Organization (WHO) Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health convened under the theme, ‘Improving Air Quality, Combating Climate Change: Saving Lives.’ Participants acknowledged the urgent need to scale up the global response to prevent diseases and deaths from air pollution, which claims seven million lives a year, is a major driver of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as heart attacks, strokes and lung cancer, and accelerates climate change.

2 November 2018: The UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly (UNGA) debated the role of women in peace and security, nearly two decades after the Security Council’s adoption of the landmark resolution on the topic (resolution 1325 (2000)). Governments addressed the “systemic failure” to integrate women into processes as peacekeeping, mediation, and peace negotiations.

2 November 2018: Small island developing States (SIDS) committed to strengthen their efforts to tackle the impacts of climate change and achieve the SDGs, during a preparatory meeting for the midterm review of the SAMOA Pathway. The SIDS Accelerated Modalities of Action (SAMOA) Pathway, the outcome of the Third International Conference on SIDS conference in 2014, covers the period 2015-2025, and promotes international assistance to address challenges faced by small islands.
UN Photo/Eskinder Debebe Canada, Ghana to Lead Consultations on FfD High-level Dialogue
30 October 2018: The President of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) appointed the permanent representatives of Canada and Ghana as co-facilitators for the High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development (FfD). Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, Permanent Representative of Ghana, and Marc-Andre Blanchard, Permanent Representative of Canada, will consult with Member States on “the substantive work, including possible outcome” of the Dialogue.

30 October 2018: The UNFCCC Secretariat has published a technical paper, which compiles and shares information on the mitigation benefits and co-benefits of policies, practices and actions relating to circular economy activities with a focus on waste to energy, supply chain redesign and industrial waste reuse.

24 October 2018: The incoming Presidency of the 24th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 24) to the UNFCCC has published a summary note of the "pre-COP," which convened from 23-24 October 2018 in Krakow, Poland. The note synthesizes discussions that took place on mitigation, transparency, finance and adaptation in breakout groups, as well on the Talanoa Dialogue in a plenary session.

October 2018: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and UN Women have released a publication examining gender equality and the SDGs in Asia and the Pacific. The report establishes a baseline for governments and policymakers to monitor and accelerate progress towards gender equality commitments in the SDGs.
