The main climate event of the year, the UN Climate Change Conference, will dominate the sustainable development community’s attention from 6-17 November. This year, more than ever before, the Conference is expected to focus on the interlinkages between climate action and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

7 November 2017: The UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany, continued on 7 November 2017. The fourth part of the first session of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Paris Agreement (APA 1-4) met in plenary, followed by a contact group and informal consultations. The Conference of the Parties (COP) and the COP Serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP) resumed their plenaries, and contact groups and informal consultations convened under the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA).

7 November 2017: On Tuesday, 7 November, COP 23 side events addressed topics including: sustainable forest management (SFM) and climate change; a Global Platform for the New York Declaration on Forests and the Bonn Challenge, and their linkages with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement on climate change; building capacity to tackle regional climate and sustainable challenges; human rights and gender equality in climate action; and interlinkages between climate action, job promotion and social inclusion.
ENVIRONMENT-AIR POLLUTION Report Warns of Compound, Tipping Point Climate Events in the US
3 November 2017: A report published by the US Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) on the eve of the opening of the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, Germany, provides an updated and detailed analysis of how climate change is affecting weather and climate across the US and the globe. Titled ‘Climate Science Special Report’ (CSSR), the report integrates and evaluates findings on climate science, discusses uncertainties associated with these findings, analyzes current trends, and projects major trends to the end of this century.

7 November 2017: The UN World Data Forum called for proposals around the six thematic areas of its second meeting, including on the use of non-traditional sources of data, and increasing data literacy among the general public. Meanwhile, the UN and partners have held several meetings that addressed open data principles and practices, and considered the need to balance privacy and security concerns with openness.

6 November 2017: The research lab AidData proposed strategies for governments and development partners to mobilize better financing – not only more – to achieve the SDGs. The authors examine a “baseline” for sustainable development financing and experiences with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on donor and policy behavior.

3 November 2017: After endorsing the Pacific Roadmap for Sustainable Development in September, governments and UN officials met to discuss its implementation. The Roadmap addresses targets set under the SDGs, the SAMOA Pathway and other regional frameworks.

2 November 2017: The International Finance Corporation (IFC) has released a report on the vital role of the private sector in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Titled ‘Creating Markets for Climate Business: An IFC Climate Investment Opportunities report,’ the publication shows that more than US$1 trillion in investments has flowed into climate-related projects in key industry sectors, such as renewable energy and off-grid solar and storage, while trillions more can be mobilized through an enabling policy and business environment.

October 2017: The UN is partnering with a range of private sector stakeholders to help advance the SDGs, including an airline company in Nepal and a health and hygiene company. The UN is also also working to help leverage funding for the SDGs, including encouraging companies to increase "impact investing." Further, the UN Secretary-General has released a report on enhanced cooperation with the UN and partners, particularly the private sector.
