Uniting Actions for a Sustainable and Peaceful Future
In today’s turbulent world, we are increasingly interdependent and interconnected. Global challenges – from conflict and violent extremism to poverty and the consequences of climate change – affect all societies, touching every human being. Effective and lasting solutions require new forms of global solidarity and cooperation. In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly took a significant step in this direction by committing to implementing 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

16 February 2017: UN Member States, UN agencies and stakeholders discussed the proposed themes for seven partnership dialogues that will convene during the UN Ocean Conference, as well as elements for the 'Call for Action' that will result from the Conference, during the Preparatory Meeting for the 'Ocean Conference: Our Oceans, Our Future: Partnering for the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14' (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development). Consultations on the draft 'Call to Action' will begin on 7 March.

18 February 2017: Calls and actions to balance the energy ledger emerged recently. On one side, investors and researchers highlighted the negative impacts of government support to fossil fuels and, on the other, reports showed record-breaking increases in installation of renewable energy, especially wind power.

13 February 2017: The 2017 Annual Parliamentary Hearing at the UN addressed the interlinkages between Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 (life below water) and other SDGs such as climate action (SDG 13), responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), zero hunger (SDG 2), good health and well-being (SDG 3), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), and peace, justice and strong institutions (SDG 16). Parliamentarians, UN officials, diplomats and experts discussed their roles in safeguarding and restoring the health of the oceans, considered oceans' economic benefits and stresses, including fishery management and tourism, as well as the effects of pollution and marine debris.

February 2017: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) Potsdam have produced a guide and animated film that offer “strategic guidance and inspiration” for the responsible governance of tenure of land, fisheries and forest resources. Also with an emphasis on the global commons, a tranche of projects under the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Ecosystem and Biodiversity (EBD) portfolio were approved by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in 2016, with the aim of optimizing conservation and development benefits from protected areas for countries.
