SAICM’s original mandate will end in 2020, and discussion focused on the preferred type of global platform for promoting sound management after that date. UN, Governments Prepare for National Reviews 9 February 2017: The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) Division for Sustainable Development is supporting participants to attend an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on enhancing Major Groups and other Stakeholders’ engagement in national-level reviews of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The EGM is expected to convene in Bogota, Colombia, in late March 2017. Finland Updates Parliament on National SDG Implementation 2 February 2017: The Government of Finland reported to Parliament on national implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Government's implementation has been based on a two-pronged approach: first, securing carbon neutrality and wise use of resources, and second, ensuring non-discrimination and equality. NEWS Agriculture Update: Partnerships and Progress Reports Address SDG 2 Implementation Globally January 2017: The first weeks of 2017 have seen announcements of global initiatives, regional partnerships, and progress reports towards the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal on zero hunger (SDG 2). More specifically, recent developments have addressed the finance of inclusive rural transformation, an assessment of agricultural regulations worldwide, gender in food security, climate adaptation, and the conservation of banana germplasm. Land Update: Global, National Partnerships and Projects Focus on SLM and Governance 8 February 2017: Globally, partnerships and country-level projects are lending focus to sustainable land management (SLM) and its links to food and human security. The 2017 World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD 2017), which will be celebrated on 17 June, will highlight the connections between land degradation, migration and stability. NAMA Update: Slow but Steady Growth in NAMAs, Enhanced Knowledge Exchange February 2017: This update focuses on individual nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) by developing countries, and related support, events and activities, for the period from October 2016 to January 2017. National Implementation Update: China, Sweden Take Bold Climate Action February 2017: While some countries recently broke new ground in climate ambition, a report on nationally determined contributions (NDCs) shows that there is still a long way to go to realize the full implementation of countries’ pledges under the Paris Agreement on climate change. UN Releases US$100 Million for Neglected Crises, Urges Respect for Refugee Law 31 January 2017: The UN has released US$100 million to provide humanitarian aid to more than six million people in nine countries, while urging all countries to respect international refugee law when managing their borders. The money will provide food, shelter and health care to refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Cameroon, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Libya, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia and Uganda. UNEP, Financiers Launch 'Positive Impact' Investment Principles 31 January 2017: The UN Environment Programme, in partnership with 19 banks and financiers, launched a set of principles to guide financing for sustainable development. The ‘Positive Impact Principles’ are meant to help direct some of the estimated US$5-7 trillion that will be needed for fully implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) towards meeting the global challenges of climate change, population growth and resource scarcity.
