9 February 2017: The Intersessional Process for Considering the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) and the Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste Beyond 2020 held its first meeting from 7-9 February 2017. SAICM’s original mandate will end in 2020, and discussion focused on the preferred type of global platform for promoting sound management after that date.

9 February 2017: The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) Division for Sustainable Development is supporting participants to attend an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on enhancing Major Groups and other Stakeholders’ engagement in national-level reviews of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The EGM is expected to convene in Bogota, Colombia, in late March 2017.

2 February 2017: The Government of Finland reported to Parliament on national implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Government's implementation has been based on a two-pronged approach: first, securing carbon neutrality and wise use of resources, and second, ensuring non-discrimination and equality.

UN Photo/Mark Garten Agriculture Update: Partnerships and Progress Reports Address SDG 2 Implementation Globally
January 2017: The first weeks of 2017 have seen announcements of global initiatives, regional partnerships, and progress reports towards the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal on zero hunger (SDG 2). More specifically, recent developments have addressed the finance of inclusive rural transformation, an assessment of agricultural regulations worldwide, gender in food security, climate adaptation, and the conservation of banana germplasm.

31 January 2017: The UN has released US$100 million to provide humanitarian aid to more than six million people in nine countries, while urging all countries to respect international refugee law when managing their borders. The money will provide food, shelter and health care to refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Cameroon, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Libya, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia and Uganda.

31 January 2017: The UN Environment Programme, in partnership with 19 banks and financiers, launched a set of principles to guide financing for sustainable development. The ‘Positive Impact Principles’ are meant to help direct some of the estimated US$5-7 trillion that will be needed for fully implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) towards meeting the global challenges of climate change, population growth and resource scarcity.
