NEWS CGRFA 16 Approves Draft Resolutions on SDGs, Animal Genetic Resources 3 February 2017: The sixteenth session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA 16) submitted two draft resolutions to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) Conference, at the close of its meeting in Rome, Italy. The resolutions outline the Commission’s contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and reaffirm the international community’s commitment to its Global Plan of Action to maintain the genetic diversity of farm animals and domesticated species. UNDP Board Reflects on SDG Implementation, Anti-Corruption, Disabilities 3 February 2017: The first regular session of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Executive Board for 2017 discussed the outcomes of major development processes, implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and development of UNDP’s Strategic Plan 2018-2021, among other topics. The Board also heard reports on UNDP’s contribution to addressing anti-corruption and supporting disability-inclusive development. Ocean Conference Officials Call for Focus on Action 2 February 2017: In briefings for Member States and civil society, the co-facilitators and co-hosts of the UN Ocean Conference emphasized the potential contributions of Sustainable Development Goal 14 to the overall 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and called for a focus on solutions, actions and concrete recommendations. Sustainable Energy Finance Update: Transportation and Housing Projects Receive Support 2 Feburary 2017: During the month of January, several multilateral development banks (MDBs) approved support for initiatives spanning Africa, Asia, Central and South America, and Europe. These projects seek to increase renewable energy capacity, improve energy efficiency or reduce demand for energy in the transportation and housing sectors. AU Summit Addresses Alignment between Agenda 2063, Paris Agreement and 2030 Agenda 2 February 2017: The 28th Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) addressed the alignment between Africa’s Agenda 2063, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change. With a focus on the theme, ‘Harnessing the Demographic Dividend through Investment in Youth,’ the Summit also discussed opportunities for enhancing the role of young people in development GSP, UNCCD Spearhead Global Soil Organic Carbon Map 27 January 2017: The Global Soil Partnership (GSP) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Science-Policy Interface (SPI) of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) are coordinating efforts to launch the first Global Soil Organic Carbon Map during World Soil Day celebrations on 5 December 2017.
