The World Water Council (WWC), the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs of the Republic of Korea, and the International Water Association (IWA) launched the “Water Futures and Solutions: World Water Scenarios” initiative designed to provide scientific assessment of options to address current and future water challenges.
4 February 2013: The World Water Council (WWC), the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs of the Republic of Korea, and the International Water Association (IWA) have launched the “Water Futures and Solutions: World Water Scenarios” initiative designed to provide scientific assessment of options to address current and future water challenges.
The initiative, launched on 4 February 2013, at IIASA headquarters in Laxenburg, Austria, will last six years and will present its first results at the 7th World Water Forum, taking place in the Republic of Korea in 2015. The initiative will apply IIASA’s “Applied Systems Analysis” approach to generating water resource and demand scenarios at global, regional and national levels, as well as assessing possible solutions to existing and projected water demand.
The launch highlighted that the initiative partners academia, business, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the UN in an innovative manner. The launch also provided an opportunity for approximately 70 participants to discuss needs and priority areas, as well as to address challenges and opportunities presented by the initiative.
