Wu Hongbo Takes Office as Head of DESA

Wu Hongbo, appointed to succeed Sha Zukang as head of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), “will guide DESA's normative, analytical and capacity development work, especially as it advances towards a post-2015 development framework with sustainable development at its core," according to DESA.

Wu took office on 1 August 2012.

1 August 2012: Wu Hongbo has begun his term as Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, and head of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), as of 1 August 2012.

DESA notes that Wu “will guide DESA’s normative, analytical and capacity development work, especially as it advances towards a post-2015 development framework with sustainable development at its core.”

Formerly China’s ambassador to Germany, Wu was appointed by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 31 May 2012. He replaces Sha Zukang, whose term ended on 31 July 2012. [DESA Press Release] [IISD RS Story on Wu’s Appointment]
