World Congress of Soil Science Highlights GSP and International Year of Soils

Celebrating the 90th anniversary of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), the 20th World Congress of Soil Science (WCSS) considered soils in space and time, soil properties and process, soil management and soil sustainability.

20wcss13 June 2014: Celebrating the 90th anniversary of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), the 20th World Congress of Soil Science (WCSS) considered soils in space and time, soil properties and process, soil management and soil sustainability.

In the opening comments to the WCSS, the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), Jose Graziano da Silva, called on scientists and FAO member States to use the Global Soil Partnership (GSP) as a platform for sharing information and advocating for the preservation of soils. He also noted that 2015 will be celebrated as the International Year of Soils.

The 20th WCSS was held in Jeju, the Republic of Korea from 8-13 June 2014 under the theme ‘Soils Embrace Life and Universe.’ Partners of the meeting included the European Commission, the GSP and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). [FAO News Release] [WCSS Website]
