World Bank17 October 2014: The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) have created a course to support Vietnamese businesses in developing sustainable energy-related solutions and adaptation technologies in the transport, agricultural and water sectors. The ‘Clean Tech Bootcamp,’ which consisted of lectures and workshops for 24 small- and medium-size clean-technology start-up companies, will be proceeded with support from a local business hub, to be established in the second half of 2014.

Developed by the Climate Technology Program (CTP), part of the World Bank’s infoDev program, together with the ADB, the Bootcamp aimed to support the growth of new “green” businesses in the region while reducing threats caused by climate change. The course sought to support entrepreneurs in: knowledge product strategies, business models and marketing pitches; negotiating skills development; and networking.

The participating companies were selected through a competition titled ‘Proof of Concept,’ launched in April 2014, which received more than 150 applications. The selected entries included: a biomass gasifier for low-income households; water filtration equipment; low-emission hybrid passenger vehicles; and a light-emitting diode (LED) system for fishing vessels.

The participating companies, as well as other climate technology small- and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups, will receive further support through the Climate Innovation Center (Viet Nam CIC), based in Ho Chi Minh, Viet Nam, which is being established with support from the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The Viet Nam CIC will provide advisory services and technology commercialization funding for up to 65 climate technology entrepreneurs in its first five-year period.

infoDev, part of the World Bank, is a global multi-donor program supporting entrepreneurs in securing early-stage financing, convening entrepreneurs and other stakeholders, and creating knowledge products. [World Bank Press Release] [infoDev Press Release] [CTP Website] [Viet Nam CIC Website]
