19 March 2010: The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) highlighted its plans to invest significantly in Viet Nam during a visit to ICRAF headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, by Vietnamese representatives. The meeting focused on how the Centre and Viet Nam’s Department of Science, Technology and International Cooperation could collaborate, in particular on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (REDD).

The Vietnamese delegation underscored the role played by scientists in the development of REDD and stressed the need for policy-level documents as well as simple guidelines and training to assist local people in monitoring carbon stocks. A memorandum of understanding is to be signed between ICRAF and Viet Nam’s Forestry Department to work jointly on REDD, payments for environmental services, forest management and conservation.
