9 May 2013: The South African Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), with support from GIZ and the International Partnership on Mitigation and Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV), organized a regional workshop on tracking mitigation actions in Africa. The event aimed to encourage the sharing of actions that individual African countries are taking and encouraging more countries to take early actions on climate change.

The workshop took place from 7-9 May 2013, in Magaliesberg, South Africa. Its main objectives included: presenting ongoing mitigation actions; providing up-to-date self-assessments of greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories in different African countries; identifying existing information and support needs to respond to the enhanced reporting requirements of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC); and providing a platform for ongoing interaction among African countries to discuss their commitments under the UNFCCC.

The International Partnership on Mitigation and MRV was launched within the framework of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in May 2010 in Bonn, Germany, by South Africa, the Republic of Korea and Germany. The overall aim of the Partnership is to support a practical exchange on mitigation-related activities and MRV between developing and developed countries in order to help close the global ambition gap. The Partnership contributes to the design and implementation of low-emission development strategies (LEDS), nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) and MRV.
