Euroclima4 September 2014: A three-day workshop discussed priority actions and initiatives needed in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to address agriculture and climate change, and agreed on an agenda for work on the subject under the EUROCLIMA programme on agriculture, food security and climate change.

The workshop, which was held from 2-4 September 2014, in Mexico City, Mexico, examined the objectives and current and potential projects under Component 3: Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change of EUROCLIMA, the regional cooperation programme between the EU and Latin America focused on climate change. EUROCLIMA is funded by the European Commission and Component 3 is to be jointly implemented by the Interamerican Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the EU’s Joint Research Centre (JRC). This Component seeks to reinforce the capacity of the agricultural sector in 18 LAC countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela) to adapt to climate change and mitigate its effects, in the process contributing to regional food security.

Workshop participants agreed that Component 3 work should focus on climate modeling for the agricultural sector, comprehensive risk management in agriculture and actions to combat drought and desertification brought on, or exacerbated by, climate change. They also emphasized the importance of promoting South-South cooperation within the EUROCLIMA Component 3 context.

The workshop was organized by IICA and the JRC and hosted by the Mexican Government. [IICA Press Release] [EUROCLIMA Component 3: Sustainable Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change Website]
