Women Leaders Call for Increasing Women’s Participation in the UNFCCC
story highlights

Lakshmi Puri, UN Women, and Mary Robinson, President of the Mary Robinson Foundation, call for adoption of a goal of gender balance to improve women's participation in UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations and in the representation of Parties in bodies established by the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol, in the Stakeholder Forum's Outreach publication.

27 November 2012: A joint opinion piece by two women leaders, titled “Say Yes to Women’s Participation in the UNFCCC,” highlights women’s essential role in the global response to climate change, and champions the tabling of a gender decision at the ongoing climate negotiations in Doha, Qatar.

Lakshmi Puri, UN Women, and Mary Robinson, President of the Mary Robinson Foundation, highlight the impacts of climate change on women and women’s essential role in a global response. They call for adoption of a goal of gender balance to improve women’s participation in UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations and in the representation of parties in bodies established by the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol.

The authors refer to the outcome document of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), which mentions substantially increasing the number of women in leadership positions, with the aim of achieving gender parity. They say that taking a decision on women’s participation on climate change negotiations at the 18th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 18) taking place in Doha, Qatar, will help renew commitment to advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment at “this critical juncture” of discussions on sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 development framework.

Their op-ed was published in a special edition of the Stakeholder Forum’s Outreach magazine on “Women and Climate Change.”

UN Women is contributing to various events on women and gender equality at COP 18, including the UNFCCC’s Momentum for Change Initiative, where a new pillar of action on “Women for Results” will be launched on 5 December.
