16 February 2010: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), together with its World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the Turkish State Meteorological Service, are holding the Technical Conference on “Changing Climate and Demands for Climate Services for Sustainable Development” in Antalya, Turkey, from 16-18 February 2010.

The Technical Conference has brought together over 150 scientists from over 80 countries, including experts from the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, climate research institutes, universities and environmental monitoring organizations. The outcomes of the recent World Climate Conference-3, which decided to establish the Global Framework for Climate Services, are expected to constitute a key driver for the deliberations at the meeting.
Mannava K. Sivakumar, Director of the Climate Prediction and Adaptation Branch at the WMO, stressed the importance of “fine-tuning” climate information, products and services “to support societal adaptation to climate variability and change.” She explained that the conference would identify currently available tools, techniques, infrastructure, systems and human capacity within the WMO and its partners for serving the user requirements for a range of climate information products and services at all levels.
Mehmet Caglar, Permanent Representative of Turkey with the WMO, indicated that the organization now focuses on determining the demands of the climate services for sustainable development. Highlighting that “the biggest hazard against this development is climate change,” she underlined that organizing a conference on the demands of climate services for sustainable development is “crucial.”
The conference agenda includes a one-day joint meeting between the Commission for Climatology of the WMO and the Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) for the WCRP, which is co-sponsored by the WMO, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Council for Science. The meeting will focus on how the WCRP climate research community and other partners can work with the WMO Commission for Climatology to comprehensively address the rapidly emerging societal needs for climate services for adaptation and risk management.
