The 2008 theme was “Observing our planet for a better future.” In his message commemorating the day, Michel Jarraud, WMO Secretary General , emphasized the “vital and unprecendented relevance of global observations,” noting the importance of integrating WMO observing systems to support adaptation to climate change, natural disaster risk reduction, as well as other weather-, water- and climate-related services.
