The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) are strengthening their collaboration on areas of common concern, such as agricultural meteorology, desertification and drought.
13 June 2014: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) are strengthening their collaboration on areas of common concern, such as agricultural meteorology, desertification and drought.
During a meeting at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy, WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud and FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva explored ways to enhance their partnership in addressing climate change and sustainable development, among other challenges. They also agreed to update the WMO-FAO Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize this collaboration.
WMO and FAO will continue to collaborate on, inter alia: how weather affects desert locusts; the impacts of climate change on fisheries; drought management policies and capacity development; the impacts of El Niño on farmers and fishers; support to those accessing and applying climate information; implementation of the UN Integrated Strategy for the Sahel; and remote sensing to support agricultural meteorology.
