Meteorological Organization (WMO) Observing System Research and Predictability
Experiment (THORPEX) International Core Steering Committee convened at WMO
headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, from 18-20 November 2008.
THORPEX is a key
research meteorological component of the WMO Natural Disaster Reduction and
Mitigation Programme. It aims at accelerating improvements in the accuracy of
one-day to two-week high-impact weather forecasts for the benefit of society,
the economy and the environment. The THORPEX Steering Committee addressed,
inter alia, THORPEX Working Groups’ activities, regional developments and
crosscutting issues, including its collaboration with the World Climate
Research Programme, and activities within the International Polar Year and the
