November 2009: A recent article published in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization (WHO) addresses the links between population growth and climate change.The authors of “Taking the heat out of the population and climate debate” note that reducing local overpopulation decreases vulnerability to near-term environmental and other stresses, and mitigates climate change over the long term. Improved access to reproductive health services is thus seen as a win-win intervention to improve individual well being and reduce climate change. The authors, at the same time, caution against using the need to reduce climate change as a justification for curbing the fertility of individual women. [WHO Bulletin Article]
