World Economic Forum13 December 2013: The World Economic Forum (WEF) has published its second report on “The Global Energy Architecture Performance Index Report,” which presents results of the Energy Architecture Performance Index (EAPI) transition monitoring tool and explores various energy transition pathways and challenges.

The report was published as part of the Forum’s New Energy Architecture initiative, which aims to better understand changes taking place in global energy systems and how they can be effectively managed. The EAPI tool at the root of its analysis underscores how various national energy systems perform against each other. The report reveals that energy transitions are very different for each national context, but also indicates that there is no single method required to achieve a balanced energy system and transition. That said, the report indicates that economic development does bear heavily on a country’s ability to effectively transition.

The report ranks countries in terms of three “baskets” of performance: economic growth and development; environmental sustainability; and energy access and security. All but two of the top ten transition countries are wealthy Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, with the exceptions being Costa Rica and Colombia. The report highlights what each of these successful countries is doing that has helped secure this progress, and also explores differences and challenges among countries and regions that are likely hindering their transition to a new energy architecture.
