Viet Nam Becomes 69th Party to ITTA

The Government of Viet Nam has announced its accession to the International Tropical Timber Agreement, 2006 (ITTA, 2006), becoming the 69th Party to join the Agreement, which is focused on ensuring the sustainable management of tropical timber.

ITTO logo10 April 2014: The Government of Viet Nam has announced its accession to the International Tropical Timber Agreement, 2006 (ITTA, 2006), becoming the 69th Party to join the Agreement, which is focused on ensuring the sustainable management of tropical timber.

According to the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), Viet Nam has a forest area of 13.38 million hectares, covering over 40% of its territory. Viet Nam produces and exports wooden furniture, with exports totaling $3.3 billion in 2011. The country imports tropical industrial roundwood and sawnwood, primarily from Cambodia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) and Myanmar.

The ITTA, 2006, the international treaty under which ITTO operates, entered into force on 7 December 2011. [ITTO Press Release] [ITTA]
