19 July 2011: During the second annual meeting of the US-India Strategic Dialogue, the two countries committed to continuing to broaden and deepen their global strategic partnership, including efforts to address climate change, ensure mutual energy security, and build a clean energy economy that will drive investment, job creation, and economic growth throughout the 21st century.

The meeting included India’s Minister of External Affairs Shri S.M. Krishna and US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who met in New Delhi, India, on 19 July 2011. An Energy Dialogue Steering Committee reviewed progress on various initiatives under the US-India Partnership to Advance Clean Energy, ongoing Energy Dialogue activities and explored new areas of collaboration on clean energy. In addition, the US and India reiterated the need for continued diplomatic efforts towards the establishment of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India pipeline both for improved energy security in the subcontinent and the relatively clean energy natural gas. Both countries committed to continue to work together to advance energy security and help ensure secure, reliable, and affordable energy supplies.

The US and India discussed continued collaboration on reducing short-lived climate forcers through the Global Methane Initiative, the US-India Task Force on hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and domestic black carbon research initiatives. The two countries also discussed the upcoming 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Durban, South Africa, in late 2011, reaffirming their intention to work together toward making the Cancun agreements operational.
