story highlights

The health care company Humana has identified the SDGs that align with its ‘Healthy People, Healthy Planet and Healthy Performance’ platform, namely SDG 3 (good health and well-being), SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production) and SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), respectively.

Its latest CSR report, which reports by SDG, notes that the company has reduced emissions by more than 6% and diverted 40% of waste that would have gone to landfills by using less and recycling more.

8 August 2018: The latest corporate social responsibility report from Humana, a US-based health and well-being company, highlights the company’s alignment with the SDGs, making it one of the first US health insurers to commit to the Goals. In the 2016-2017 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report, Humana analyzes its corporate responsibility efforts and commitments against the SDGs and identifies the Goals that align with its ‘Healthy People, Healthy Planet and Healthy Performance’ platform: namely SDG 3 (good health and well-being), SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production) and SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), respectively.

Humana’s ‘Healthy People’ pillar details its efforts to improve the health of its employees, its members and the communities it serves. The company has instituted the ‘Bold Goal,’ which aims to help communities become 20% healthier by 2020. In 2017, four communities in Texas and New Orleans demonstrated improved health due, in part, to strong relationships among physicians, patients and community groups.

The ‘Healthy Planet’ pillar addresses environmental sustainability, with the report explaining that, since 2014, Humana has reduced emissions by more than 6% and diverted 40% of waste that would have gone to landfills by using less and recycling more. As of 30 June 2018, Humana had achieved a 5% reduction in emissions as a result of investments in building efficiency improvements, optimization of building occupancy rates and new energy-efficient processes. The company aims to decrease emissions by 2.1% each year over a five-year period through 2022, and divert 60% of its waste from landfills by 2022.

‘Healthy Performance’ focuses on implementing best practices in the healthcare industry by promoting inclusion and diversity in Humana’s workforce, supporting employees’ professional development through training programmes, and holding suppliers to high standards. Eight employee-led network resource groups, including one for employees with disabilities, provide platforms for exchanging ideas, building community and driving measurable business outcomes. More than 25% of Humana’s employees participate in the groups.

The report’s content was collected and reported in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), which helps businesses, governments and other organizations understand and communicate the impact of business on sustainability issues.
